Mathematics involves observation, representation, investigation and comparison of patterns and relationships in social and physical phenomena. It allows the creative solution of problems and is also a powerful, precise and concise means of communication. The purpose of Standard Mathematics is to provide an appropriate mathematical background for students who wish to enter occupations which require the use of basic mathematical and statistical skills and techniques.
If students select Mathematics Standard 1 in the HSC year, it is important that they are aware that it has been categorised as a Category B subject. Students may only choose ONE Category B subject if they are wanting an ATAR. Therefore, students wishing to study both English Studies and Mathematics Standard 1 will NOT be able to get an ATAR. If students are wanting an ATAR and select Mathematics Standard 1, then they will need to elect to undertake an optional HSC Mathematics Standard 1 examination.
