Stage 6 - English (Standard)
Course Overview
English (Standard) is a 2 unit course designed for students to increase their expertise in English in order to enhance their personal, social and vocational lives. The students learn to respond to and compose a wide variety of texts in a range of situations in order to be effective, creative and confident communicators.
Course Content
Year 11
Students are required to:
- study Australian and other texts;
- explore a range of types of text drawn from prose fiction, drama, poetry, nonfiction, film, media and/or multimedia texts;
- undertake wide reading programs involving texts and textual forms composed in and for a wide variety of contexts;
- integrate the modes of reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing and representing as appropriate; and
- engage in the integrated study of language and text.
Year 12
Students are required to:
- reflect on and demonstrate the effectiveness of texts for different audiences and purposes.
- respond to and compose a range of texts.
Text Requirements include:
- the close study of at least THREE TYPES OF PRESCRIBED TEXT, one drawn from EACH of the following categories: prose fiction; drama or poetry; nonfiction or film or media or multimedia texts; and
- a wide range of additional texts and textual forms.

- Tests
- Examinations
HSC Examination
- Paper 1 - 1 hour 30 minutes (Common Module)
- Paper 2 - 2 hours (Modules A, B and C)
Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills
The only prerequisite is the completion of Year 10 or its equivalent. This is a course suitable for students choosing not to attempt the Advanced subject.
PLEASE NOTE
English is a required subject for completion of the HSC. English (Advanced) satisfies this aspect of the HSC. Students completing this course will be eligible for an ATAR.
