The Stage 5 English course inspires students to learn about the power, value and art of language for communication, knowledge and pleasure. They develop clear and precise skills in speaking, listening, reading, writing, viewing and representing. In Year 9, students focus on the textual representation of issues that are personally, culturally and globally significant. In Year 10, coursework emboldens students to purposefully experiment with language in their own representation and reflection. Throughout Stage 5 students develop an appreciation of texts from the past and an understanding of how these texts have influenced contemporary ways of thinking. Stage 5 English students further their progress on the high school skill-building continuum, with particular focus on analysing the ways composers use language to shape messages and influence audiences.

Formal summative assessment tasks allow students to demonstrate their understanding using a range of communication modes throughout Stage 5. These include:
English is a compulsory subject of study at the HSC level. ALL students must study English Studies* or English (Standard) or English (Advanced). Students in the English (Advanced) course may then elect to study English Extension 1 in Stage 6 and possibly English Extension 2 in Year 12; both of these subjects have entry requirements.
*English Studies is a Category B HSC subject and will only be offered if there is enough interest in the course.
