The study of Design and Technology develops a student’s ability for innovative and creative design, through the planning and production of design projects related to real-life needs and situations. Students work through the design process (researching, experimenting, planning, constructing and evaluating) on a range of projects. Graphic and written communication skills are taught in the researching, planning and evaluating stages. Students are taught project management skills in regard to the best use of time, resources and equipment. The subject introduces students to some aspects of the wide field of technology, including a study of the impact of some technologies on society and the environment.

Students are assessed on management and completion of quality design projects, written portfolio and research tasks.
The cost of consumables and projects made in Year 9 are covered in the subject fees. In Year 10 the students are provided with basic construction timber and metal, however students need to determine the cost of extras in their design projects and have parental support for payment prior to starting work.
Design and Technology is currently offered as a course of study in Stage 6. The Stage 5 course is not a prerequisite for entry at a higher level. However, students who have completed the Stage 5 course have developed a range of skills useful for further study in Stage 6 Design and Technology.
