Course Overview
Commerce is a NSW Education Standards Authority endorsed subject which encompasses many aspects of everyday life. This includes: dealing in financial matters, understanding the role of business, recognising the role of the law in society, and matters relating to employment issues and the economy at large.
Course Content
Students learn to:
- act ethically and socially responsibly in relation to personal decision making, business practices, employment and legal issues.
- value and appreciate fundamental rights, rules and laws that promote fairness, justice and equity in our society throughresponsible and active citizenship.
- run a school-based business.
Students learn about:
- Consumer, financial, business, legal and employment matters.
- Decision-making and problem-solving in relation to consumer, financial, business, legal and employment issues.
- Options relating to travel and community involvement, becoming independent and concepts relating to globalisation.
- Running a business (Business Week).
- How laws are made and enforced.

Possible Subject Pathways in Stage 6
Stage 5 Commerce course is not a prerequisite for entry at a higher level. Students who have completed the Stage 5 course have developed a range of skills useful for further study at Stage 6, including the subjects Business Studies, Legal Studies, Geography, and Design and Technology.
