In Year 7 English students are currently studying a unit of work called 'Welcome to Country', which prompts students to answer the driving question: How can we use storytelling and/or multimedia to share new awareness and respect for the Indigenous culture and First Peoples of our nation? Students are studying a range of texts where composers express ideas about connection to Country. Through this, we are seeking to establish the values of respect, tolerance and custodianship through a range of learning experiences that explore the oldest living culture in the world.
A really interactive and fun experience that students enjoyed on Tuesday this week were two mentoring sessions with Jonathan and Tammie Wright from Dhinewan Mentoring. Jonathan is a former NRL player who now is a mentor and role model for young people, communities and rugby league players. He is passionate about wellbeing and believes when people have a positive outlook and a strong connection to who they are, people become the best version of themselves. His mother, Tammie, is an incredible local and national community advocate for Aboriginal culture, healing and reconciliation. These sessions engaged students with a range of relevant topics about First Nations’ cultures such as: language, song lines, stories, sacred sites, ceremonies, and how we can live more sustainably with our environment. We are so grateful to the amazing team at Dhinewan Mentoring for providing these exceptional learning experiences to our Year 7 students.
