In Year 7 English students are currently studying a unit of work called 'Welcome to Country', which prompts students to answer the driving question: What can we learn from our elders about sustainable living and how can we share this with others? Students are studying a range of texts where composers express ideas about connection to Country. Through this, we are seeking to establish the values of respect, tolerance and custodianship through a range of learning experiences that explore the oldest living culture in the world.A really interactive and fun experience that students are enjoying and learning a lot from are the weekly mentoring sessions each Monday afternoon with Jonathan Wright from Dhinewan Mentoring. Jonathan is a former NRL player who now is a mentor and role model for young people, communities and rugby league players. He is passionate about wellbeing and believes when people have a positive outlook and a strong connection to who they are, people become the best version of themselves. His sessions are covering a range of relevant topics about First Nations’ cultures such as: language, dance, stories, kinship, art, sacred sites, ceremonies, and how we can live more sustainably with our environment. Students are especially enjoying the opportunities to learn Awabakal language and dances, and even those students who are needing to isolate at home are enjoying the sessions over Zoom. These sessions started in Week 3 and will continue each Monday until the end of this term. We are so grateful to Jonathan and his amazing team at Dhinewan Mentoring for providing these exceptional learning experiences to our Year 7 students.
