On Monday morning, 74 Year 7 students and nine staff headed to Crosslands Youth & Convention Centre for their first Secondary School camp. First up was the 6km hike (thankfully mostly downhill!) which challenged some, while others were keen to jog ahead and leave the rest behind. After the hike there was an afternoon swim in the pool and a yummy dinner to satisfy hungry bellies. Then at night it was out to the big flying fox. Squeals and shrieks echoed down the valley till 10.00pm from those who wanted to give it a go while they glided down the hill to a safe landing. Other activities that challenged students and teachers alike included canoeing, abseiling, crossing the Burma Bridge, high ropes and leaps of faith.
The Year 7 camp is early in the year for a reason. We want the Year 7 students to feel like they belong - to their Check-In groups, to their class groups and to their school. Connections were made between students, and between students and staff. They have also built relationships with the Year 11 students through our Peer Support Program, which makes their bonds extend beyond the junior cohort. The benefits flow back to school, into the classroom, into the sports teams, and into their friendship groups. They have faced challenges, as well as had fun together. This creates a common bond - a shared experience. Year 7 you belong!
A big thank you to the Out and About crew who ran our activities, and the Peer Support leaders and staff who helped make the camp a success.
