Last Wednesday, some 29 Year 7 and 8 students made their way to The Great Hall at Newcastle University for the 2022 Build ME a Future Event (a Science and Engineering Challenge). Students participated in teams of three or four in challenges such as: Mars Rover (designing and building a vehicle to traverse the mountainous landscape), ElectraCITY (simulation on power distribution), Helter Skelter Shelter (design and build a tall platform that can withstand ground movement), and many other challenges including the penultimate challenge GOLD FEVER! (build and test a bridge to carry gold across a gorge).
Students enjoyed a day of challenge and fun, and learnt lots about collaboration, problem solving, and preserving for the best result.
Competition on the day was strong and Avondale School finished in 4th place. Mr Vogel, Mrs Venegas and Mrs Carrasco were proud of the team performances and were impressed with how the students learned important lessons from the activities. This event for students in Years 7 and 8 will give more students the opportunity to be challenged in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) activities
