Year 12 PROPEL students have had the opportunity to visit some local heroes in the past two weeks as part of their English Studies module, aiming to learn about some of the areas of need in the local community. Dee from Hunter Wildlife Rescue invited the students to visit her rescue and rehabilitation facility where she cares for injured and orphaned macropods. Local habitat destruction and increased local traffic have seen an increase in the number of animals needing assistance in recent years. The program is part of a large operation around the Hunter operating under NSW National Parks and Wildlife, ensuring rehabilitation and release for as many animals as possible. Students learned about the level of care required, the legal obligations and responsibilities, and also had the chance to feed and cuddle some of the babies currently in care.
The second opportunity was facilitated by Christine and her team from Southlakes Inc. Students visited Southlakes and had a tour of the facility to see the magnitude of the need in the local community. With more than 80 people homeless in the immediate Cooranbong and Morisset area, the team at Southlakes provides emergency support and weekly food support to an increasing number of families each week. The students had the opportunity to help pack toiletry bags to be given away to homeless people, and gift packs for events during NAIDOC week.
These opportunities instilled a greater awareness in the students of the local community, and also instigated many meaningful conversations and ideas of how each of us can contribute. Thank you Dee and Christine, for the impact you have in the local community and for allowing us to see what you and your teams do.
