On May 5 - 7 our Year 11 students had the opportunity to attend the Urban Challenge camp. The aim of this particular camp is to give our young people an opportunity to explore Sydney, familiarising them with how to navigate the hustle and bustle of city life, gaining confidence in using public transport networks in getting from A to B, and experiencing some of what the city has to offer culturally, educationally and socially.
On day one students visited Bankstown and were immersed in a cultural food tour. Our incredible tour guides, all recent migrants to Australia, introduced us to a range of Vietnamese, Greek and Middle-Eastern food provedores. We were spoiled by our hosts’ bounteous offerings of delicious dishes from their home cultures, and blessed by the sharing of their stories of migration and the genesis of their businesses. In the evening, a trip on the Manly ferry took us to our dinner destinations along the corso, which was followed by a stunning walk over the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Day two saw students enjoy a very informative tour of Sydney University, where they gained some insights into what uni-life and education can look and feel like, and later that night many students went to Homebush Stadium to witness the Rabbitohs being demolished by the Melbourne Storm. Unfortunately, the announcement of two new COVID cases in Sydney brought a premature end to our time in Sydney, but once again, our teachers saw our young people shine in the public eye as the mature, compassionate and responsible young people we know they are, and are sure that the students created many life-long memories from our time in the ‘big smoke’. Good one, Year 11!!
