An extraordinary experiment unfolded this Tuesday, as the intrepid souls of the Year 11 PROPEL class took to the waters for a truly unique learning experience. Armed with their wits, mathematical prowess, and a splash of creativity, the students embarked on a voyage that blended the rigours of academic study with the thrill of hands-on exploration. Their mission? To put their math measurement and calculation skills to the ultimate test by designing and constructing a raft capable of navigating the entire class (in small groups) across the school dam.
With calculations swirling, they delved into the realms of area, length, breadth, perimeter and volume, grappling with the nuances of absolute and percentage errors, buoyancy calculations, units of energy and mass and the intricate dance of specific units of measurement. To this they added new skills in rope lashing.
While some harboured doubts, unsure if their calculations and skills would hold, the raft successfully floated, carrying students and teacher back and forth across the waters. In the end, it was not just a raft they had built, but a bridge between theory and practice, between classroom learning and real-world application.
