Students in Stage 6 Visual Arts visited the Art Gallery of NSW to view and experience several extraordinary current exhibitions. Louise Bourgeois: Has the Day Invaded the Night or Has the Night Invaded the Day? reveals the reach and intensity of her art. From the well-lit rooms of ‘Day’, to the darkened terrain of ‘Night’, downstairs in the Tank, students encountered many works never seen before in Australia. ‘Maman', Bourgeois’s giant spider is an unmissable first encounter, which stands more than 9m high and 10m wide, in the forecourt of the Art Gallery’s South Building.Students also viewed the work of one of the great innovators of European abstraction, Kandinsky, who broke new ground in painting. In his influential treatise, On the spiritual in art, he wrote about art’s potential to ‘stand alone’, with imagery independent of the natural world. We also visited Artexpress 2024 which features a selection of outstanding student artworks developed for the art-making component of the HSC examination in Visual Arts in 2023. It provided insight into students’ creativity and the issues important to them.Students had a very busy day considering, analysing and appreciating the incredible diversity of artistic expression, as we viewed the way different artists communicate their ideas to the audience.
