The Year 10 students enjoyed the sunshine and went on a Geography excursion to Newcastle to learn about human-induced changes to the natural environment. Students walked from the old train line, along the foreshore to Macquarie Pier. They learnt about Nobby’s Beach and the breakwall that halts the longshore drift that ultimately causes erosion at Stockton Beach. As Newcastle is a working harbour, the students saw cargo ships importing and exporting goods, and dredging taking place from the ‘David Allan’. The students also saw the effect of invasive species along the coast with the significant amount of bitou bush in the dunes, noting that this species assists dune stabilisation. It was a great day to be outside, and brought a realisation to some of the lessons learnt in the classroom.
