As part of our examination into how laws are made and enforced, students had the opportunity to visit the Newcastle District and Supreme Courts. The students spoke to the Court Sheriff who welcomed us to court and guided us through courtroom etiquette and the potential penalties for breaching them. The students were also able to speak to a Police Detective who explained the role of witnesses in court and their importance in proving the Crown’s case. A Prosecutor also made himself available who was able to provide some information about the cases currently before the court. The students were able to see a jury trial and witness testimony in the Supreme Court and sentencing submissions in the District Court.
