Last week, the youngest member of my family turned one and enjoyed her first birthday party. It was a small occasion consisting of our immediate family, one set of grandparents and a visiting aunt and cousin. The company was lovely, the present opening wonderful, but the moment that will live long in my memory was cake time.
A cherished part of many birthday parties, a small cake was made just for my daughter alone. It was a small sponge covered in mauve-coloured frosting with numerous small likewise coloured spirals adorning the base where the cake met the plate and still more on the top. Upon having the cake placed in front of her, a huge smile spread across her face. What happened next I would describe as unbridled joy as she proceeded to touch, then carefully taste before diving headfirst into the delicious treat. Oh, what a mess was created as giggles and laughter rang out from the family looking on.
Within the English Standard Version of the Bible, joy (or rejoice or joyful) appears a total of 430 times, with the word happy or happiness found an additional ten times. Specifically, John chapter 15 promises that if we remain connected to God our lives will be filled with joy! Now that is a world that I would love for us all to live in.
