I remember over the years as I was growing up, I was told of lots of things to look out for in life. Many of them have stayed with me and remain today, and others I may have forgotten. To be fair, most of this advice has been helpful. “Always eat soup and porridge from the edge of the bowl first.” “Look both ways when crossing the road.” “We don’t run with scissors.” “Don’t set up camp under a cliff or under a tree.” “Look before you leap.” “The calm patch in a surf beach is usually a rip.” There were other things that I remember being said as well. “Always chewy with your mouth closed.” “We sit up straight at the table and our elbows are off the table – you’ll never know when the Queen may come to visit.” “We stand up when an elder enters the room.” “We hold the door open for the lady." “Offer your seat to an elder.” Now, this one may be family specific, “Don’t try and sit under a sand castle.”
While there was probably more that was said over the years, I know when my family was helping learn about these and other aspects, they were really wanting to set me up for success, and give me the confidence to ‘try out’ life for myself. As a parent I know that we share the journey with our children and do as much as we can to support and guide along the way. I also know much of the knowledge and skills we need to meet life is learnt by having a ‘good go’ and ‘trying again’.
This brings to mind a Bible verse, “Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.” Proverbs 22:6. It is encouraging to know that we can intentionally guide our children to a path of hope and success. At Avondale School we understand the important part we play in supporting our students on their life’s journey. We believe that each student has a God given purpose and it is our privilege to help guide them on their path to greater things. We know values and skills are caught, taught and grown in safe and supportive spaces. That is why each day we design meaningful and engaging learning experiences for each student where it is safe to have a go, reflect, try again, find success and be celebrated. It is in these spaces we support and grow those desirable character traits like spirituality, creativity, collaboration, problem solving, grit, and resilience.
Avondale School is an exciting and rewarding place to be, as each day we see students hone their skills, grow in their confidence and look to creatively engage their world. So on the eve of a weekend, we would like to remind you that we are with you in looking forward to a bright future for your child. We are excited to be part of the journey and we believe that God is faithful to his promises, and because of that their path will be a great one.
