As I drove to school a few weeks ago along a rural road, a car driving in the opposite direction suddenly moved onto my side of the road. In a 100kph zone there is a very small margin of error. My first reaction was disbelief. Is this really happening? My next response was annoyance. What is wrong with that driver? In that split second moment I HAD to react. Doing nothing was not an option. I headed for the rough shoulder beside the road. My Yaris slid in the loose gravel, bounced against the ruts, dodged trees and signposts and came to a safe stop. As the dust swirled around the car my heart pounded.
When we began 2020 our course was set and we were cruising happily in the required direction. This year threw us a real curve ball; an unexpected obstacle. No time to plan or prepare. We just had to react. I am incredibly proud of our Avondale School community. Our teachers reacted to changing circumstances by mastering new technologies and adapting to provide high quality remote learning. Our excellent technology resources and staff came into their own. Our students adapted to learning from home. They learned to be more self-directed and to take more responsibility for their own learning. Many students have thrived this year. Parents had a deeper insight into education as they attempted to work remotely and support their children in learning remotely. Many parents learned why they never considered a career in education.
The thing about rapid change is that while it requires an instant response to an unknown challenge, we can be prepared. We talk a lot at Avondale about building resilience, grit and perseverance. These vital mindsets allow us to confidently navigate changes and challenges. We are committed to preparing our students for the challenges of an ever-changing, uncertain future so that they can react confidently.
We are all praying for a less challenging year in 2021, but I am confident that whatever comes our way we will use our skills and creativity to face the challenges together. God tells us not to be afraid of the future because He will strengthen, help and uphold us. (Isaiah 41:10)
Our entire Avondale School Staff wishes you and your families a peaceful and restful break. We thank you for your incredible support this year and look forward to working with you again in 2021.
