As we are nearing the end of yet another action-packed term, there remain some exciting events for Secondary students and teachers before we embark on this mid-year break.
It's great to witness the excitement build as the Secondary students are getting ready to showcase their talents in the upcoming ‘High School Musical’. The countless rehearsals and hard work will make the final performance a memorable one. I am very proud of the team of teachers and students’ commitment and dedication to putting this production together.
Another highlight is the STORMCo (Service To Others Really Matters) event which provides an excellent opportunity for our students to make a significant impact on the Cobar community. I am told that it is the highlight of the Cobar calendar which offers a unique backdrop for students to engage in meaningful service through kids' clubs and assisting families doing it tough with manual tasks like lawn mowing, gardening, and car washing to name a few.
I have been privileged to be part of and witnessed several different groups have the STORMCo experience, and no matter the group, it is always a special time. The foundation of this trip is to visit communities with the intent to serve others without a predetermined agenda or expectation of anything in return. Their goal is to present faith in action by building connections through meeting a need and returning each year to build lasting relationships.
Inevitably what happens when the students are serving, is they forget that they are doing manual labour and front up the next day eager to do it all again. I have seen my own children willing to do jobs that can be a struggle to get them to do at home. I think the key difference is that they see how they can make a difference. The students not only contribute to the local community but also develop important life skills and a sense of social responsibility.
The key foundations that underpin STORMCo are what led to this double blessing where students see a purpose greater than themselves. This becomes very powerful when they see it in action, and it is heartening to witness what happens to the group because of this shared experience.
Exploring Cobar during the STORMCo trip will add an extra dimension of learning and enjoyment for our Avondale students.
