This week is National Reconciliation Week. It is a week where all Australians can reflect on our shared histories, our cultures and the contributions that bring us together as a people. Reconciliation implies the restoring of relationships and the healing of past hurts. It is not a single act, but rather a journey. Reconciliation requires an understanding and celebration of differences. We acknowledge the past so that we can build respect, trust and inclusion in the present.
At Avondale School we believe in the value of each student and each person. No student is less than or more valuable than the other. Each is a valued child of God with strengths, challenges, and unique gifts to contribute. We want each student to know that they are loved and respected.
The motto for reconciliation week is ‘Be Brave, Make Change’. This slogan encourages individuals, families, and communities to step up and start conversations, listen, understand, advocate, seek equality, and most of all build mutual respect. As we understand the impacts of the past, we can learn, connect, and build a stronger future for all Australians. We aspire to teach our students to understand others, use their voices to speak up, and to make a difference in their world.
“He [God] has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.” 2 Corinthians 5:19-20
