The heavy rain over the last few days is not ideal for the beginning of the school year but is perfect for ornate burrowing frogs. I heard the familiar call last night and headed into the dark and rain with my torch to find these amazing frogs in my pond. Three fat, brown, somewhat ugly frogs were floating near the surface of the water.
These unique frogs are not attractive but have a unique way of surviving the Australian heat and drought. They burrow up to 1m underground with special plates on their hind legs. Once burrowed in, the ground hardens around them, and they remain buried until the ground becomes wet. As they come alive, these frogs float in ponds and puddles, loudly calling for mates with a deep ‘unk, unk, unk’. The frogs remain highly active during the rain, making the most of the opportunity while it lasts.
The new year provides an opportunity for each student to come alive. They each have a new start, new teachers, opportunities to make new friends, learn new skills, try new things and begin a new walk with Jesus. What has happened in previous years is in the rear-view mirror. The opportunities are all ahead.
Our staff team is energised and excited to get to know their students and start this new journey with them. We are the guides, the companions by their side, their cheer squad, their supports, their mentors. We want our students to take all the opportunities in front of them as they learn to become the amazing young people God created them to be. We encourage them to be brave and courageous as they grab each opportunity.
Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Isaiah 43:18-19
