A few weeks ago, I experienced a small yet impactful lesson from an unexpected source. I looked at the mighty but regularly tamed hedge that needed trimming—a simple monthly task I usually tackle without a second thought. But this time, the hedge was to teach me a lesson: what should have been a normal movement resulted in a pulled muscle in my shoulder, one that lingered for over a month. It was a humbling reminder that I’m just not as flexible as I used to be. That week, I’d already done a lot of lifting and other heavy work, and this simple task was the 'final straw that broke the camel’s back'. I became that camel, now with my own 'hump' due to the pain.
This experience reminded me of how mounting pressures affect all areas of life. We often juggle lots of responsibilities and stresses, and sometimes, a small action we’ve done a hundred times before suddenly leads to pain or discomfort. We see this with children too. When they face mounting pressures or disruptions to their usual routine, even a small event can trigger an unexpected response.
When my shoulder gave out, I sought a professional to help me work towards healing. In the same way, when we or our children feel overwhelmed, it’s important to reach out to those who can support us. It’s easy to react out of frustration or pain we feel, but the wiser path is to find solutions alongside those who can make a positive difference.
In moments like these, I’m reminded of Matthew 11:28, where Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” God calls us to bring our struggles to Him and to seek wise counsel from those around us. As a school, we’re blessed to have a community of teachers, counsellors, and fellow parents who can offer support and guidance when life feels heavy.
Let’s lean on each other, trusting that God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness, and help our children do the same as they learn and grow. Together, we can face life’s pressures with grace, knowing we are never alone.
