The news has been dominated lately by the topic of consent. We feel appalled, perhaps outraged, as we listen to the complex and heartbreaking impacts of sexual assault in society. Recently there have been calls for schools to shoulder the responsibility of teaching consent to students.
There are many factors that contribute to the disrespectful relationships that play out through media on a daily basis. Easy access to pornography impacts developing brains through it’s unrealistic, sexist and violent portrayal of intimacy. Alcohol consumption may exacerbate the poor choices that contribute to disrespectful relationships. However, removing pornography and alcohol will not solve the problem of sexual assault.
It takes a village to raise a child and our entire Avondale School team are an important part of your village. We want to partner strongly with families to help our young people navigate the challenges of growing up. We work strategically to support our graduates to transition successfully from childhood to adolescence to adulthood as young people of character.
We focus daily on embedding character development into our check-in times, worships, chapels, classes, wellbeing programs, conversations and discipline processes. We strive to work with families to help our young people to develop integrity, kindness, empathy and respect. We also seek to build the identity of each student as a loved, valued child of God. We believe that character and identity are the preventative factors in solving the problem of disrespectful relationships.
So how can we set our students up for a win?
But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God’s instruments to do his work and speak out for him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference he made for you—from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted. 1 Peter 2:9-10
