Outside, darkness has fallen like a veil hiding secrets till the morning. Each step on the way home from school has a crunch sound, similar to that of the sweetest icy pole being crunched between my teeth. Small, white flakes drift down from the canopy of heaven landing on my skin and give a little, sharp kiss as they settle, then quickly become just a memory. It is Christmas Eve. I am 14 years old and I am walking home from my local shops. Growing up in England offered a Christmas experience of snowmen outside and blazing fires inside to heat the home.
Fast forward to now, and my Christmases involve air conditioning and the sizzling of Christmas lunch being prepared on the BBQ.
Christmas past and Christmas present provide two very different experiences for my senses, but the culture and atmosphere have been the same regardless of location: Christmas has been and remains a time when individuals turn their attention to others; when communities grab hold of a sense of goodwill to all. It is a time of giving, of coming together and of embracing the festive season.
At the centre of Christmas lies the celebration of God’s declaration of love and goodwill to all of us through the gift of Jesus. His example underlies this time of giving, of family, of community, and of old things giving way to the new.
May you have an amazing Christmas season and we pray it may reveal a new picture of Jesus’ love in your life.
