When I was in school, I really struggled. I wasn’t one of those kids who had a hard time with academia but thrived in the sporting arena. No—I was pretty terrible at both. For almost the entirety of my schooling journey, I felt out of place, without a clear sense of belonging or purpose. I just didn’t fit it in.
Fast forward to mid-high school and a new Principal was appointed to our school. From that moment forward everything changed for me. Our Principal was the type of person who sought out the students who struggled and would try to show them a different path. That’s exactly what happened to me. I was a bit of a naughty kid, always getting in trouble for talking or mucking around. But this Principal saw me for more than my behaviours. He saw me for who I was and who I could be. He supported me, showing me that although I might not always see it, I was valued and had a purpose. His mentorship and care changed the trajectory of my life. That’s the thing that sparked my desire to work with people. I wanted to help others like he had helped me all those years ago. So now I’m a Chaplain, tasked with caring and supporting the students and staff in our Avondale community—and I love it.
When someone is in your corner, backing you and showing care, it’s a game-changer; and it’s the very thing the Bible speaks of. The writer of the book of Psalms, reflecting on his journey with God, wrote “But I trust in your unfailing love. I will rejoice because you have rescued me” (Psalm 13:5).
The Bible writes of the reality that God is in our corner and on our side—we are in turn called to do the same for others. To provide care, support and unfailing love to those around us. That’s a challenge that could change the world.
